1. My Maptangle/Hopoff mat had a very strong and unpleasant odor when I opened the sealed plastic bag in which it was packaged. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this odor?
Yes, there is. While the odor would eventually dissipate with use and exposure to air, we wanted to find a method that would speed this process for our customers. We tried several things to minimize the odor, all of which worked well. Happily, they involve common and inexpensive household products and a minimum of effort.
We did the following:
Let the mat stand in a tub of hot water for approximately 1 hour with 2-3 cups of distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar and a strongly scented shampoo or laundry soap (we used a lavender scented shampoo.) We also let a mat stand in a tub of hot water in which we had dissolved the contents of a 4 lb box of baking soda.
Whichever solution you choose, please make sure that the mat is completely submerged.
Rinse the mat and put it outside to dry - ours was in a mix of the sun and shade and we left it outside overnight. The next day the odor should be virtually non-existent.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and do want to assure our customers that all components of both the Maptangle® and Hopoff™ games are completely non-toxic.
If you are unable to wash your mat in the above manner, we recommend that you play your game out of doors, if convenient, until such time as you are comfortable with the level of any remaining odor.
